Spies in SecondLife
It just feels like, as usual, sci-fi can’t keep up with what is actually happening as we speak. Via Nick Carr’s very cool Rough Type blog comes this great commentary on a piece in the Washington Post about CIA concerns regarding illegal conspiracy and even training going down in SecondLife.
“The CIA already operates some private islands in Second Life, which it uses for training and meetings, but there are now plans for broader activity, suggests the Post: ‘National security officials have begun working informally to take stock of virtual worlds. That research likely will take on more urgency this year, as companies in other countries prepare to unveil their own virtual worlds.’”
It strikes me as comical to imagine the CIA avatars wandering around SecondLife trying to fit in. I wonder how they decide to present themselves. Is it all dark suits and sunglasses? Do they each still “wear” little earpieces? Or are they allowed to embrace the fantasy of a SecondLife and design themselves to be some fantasy dream of a CIA agent with wings and huge ears and massive eyes to capture everything that happens?
Do the subcultures of SecondLife spot them a mile away?
