Networks Open the Floodgates

I’m actually kind of amazed it took so long for this to happen, but both NBC and CBS (can ABC be far behind) are offering streaming video of classic shows from their archives.

From TVSquad:

“Like the NBC fodder, the CBS offering is gangbusters: full-length episodes of classic Star Trek, Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone, MacGyver, Hawaii Five-O and Melrose Place. CBS plans to add more programs and clips in the coming months, including sports and other kinds of entertainment.”

I’m sure there were those at the networks that thought this would totally undercut potential DVD sales but clearly sounder minds prevailed.  Not only can they sell advertising around this programming but it will likely boost DVD sales at the same time.
