Flaming Lips and Mountain Goats Stream Full Albums On Colbert’s Site
In yet another example of bands trying to fight piracy by giving fans what they want, both the Flaming Lips and the Mountain Goats will be allowing fans to listen to complete streams of their latest albums on the Colbert Nation website for one week following their appearances on his show.
Now, this is still in the hopes that giving people a chance to sample will boost actual sales – and it might – but what it is even more likely to do is boost fan interest and attract new fans leading to better live show ticket sales, merchandising and licensing opportunities. The truth is, anyone can record a streaming audio file with something like AudioHijack so this isn't all that different from simply allowing folks to download tracks for personal use. Revenue generated from the sale of digital music tracks or albums is a losing battle and the more that musicians and those helping them earn a living realize that and focus on the new revenue channels supported by the free distribution of digital tracks the better.
