SecondLife, the most flexible and compelling of the virtual worlds out there in cyberspace, is taking a significant step in the realm of VR-education:

Today Linden announced the first statewide roll out of a virtual learning environment. Funded by a grant from the University of Texas State's Transforming Undergraduate Education Program the company will provide a huge space for faculty, students and researchers to explore a virtual undergrad degree program.    (via)

I remember, during my undergrad days in the early-90's, I explored a completely text-based precursor to this called LambdaMOO.  While it lacked the ability to do many of the things possible in a SecondLife classroom – show a movie, say – there was definitely something exciting about the concept, even then.

I'm eager to see what those working on the SecondLife University come up with.
